wheel spinning on lift

Post by cadman2005 »

I have my dune buggy on a lift and finally got it running thanks to Joseph
when the engine is running, the driver side axle spins like mad, you can stop it with your foot. When its on the ground there is no movement
and everything seems ok.. secondly now and and then when I lift it off the ground I get a very small amount of what seems like trans oil dripping out of the brake drum (I have changed both axle seals and I have new brake cylinders) any ideas?
thanks

Chuck I'm sure you most of checked the gear oil level on level ground ... Might be a tad to much?
As for the spinning wheel, that's common.

What is happening with the wheel spining when the buggy is in the air is normal. Because the gear oil is high viscosity (thicker) it just and action that causes the gears to spin when there is no load on them.

Sometime both wheels will spin depending on which side brakes have more drag on them.

As for the oil leaking out of the axle it could be cause by a few things including the seal race (large spacer) having a bad spot on it from rust not allowing the seal to do it job. The small oring that sandwiches between the seal race and the flat shim that goes up against the bearing. The shim is very important as it keeps the oring from going between the bearing and axle. If the vent hole on the nose cone is plugged the internal pressure will cause oil to leak out from lease path of resistance.

Having a bent axle can also cause leaking. You would see if by spinning the rear wheels.
