I had the same one on Loretta, and it was about a hair away from the speedo, which had a poorly made rubber seal holding it in place. It also stuck out a 1/4".

Update 2/26
Installed the speedo.

Had to move the fuel gauge vibrator to clear the wiper assy.


Not the best pictures but you can see that the clearance will work. If the speedo did not have the fuel gauge in it there would not have been a problem. (I did run the wiper motor to make sure all was good)

That's probably the reason mine cleared. I didn't have the integrated fuel gage in mine. It was only the speedo. It's also the reason I'm going with the new gauges. The speedo worked but the odometer didn't. Can't have that. At least that's the reason that I told my wife that I needed all new Speedhut gauges. Shhh....

Thanks for the kind words! With the restoration, new wiring and a new engine he really does not have an excuse.

With a new dash and not cutting it down there is plenty of room for the speedo fuel gauge setup. The Manx 2 dash also has plenty of room and easy access from underneath. You could always buy a rebuilt VW one or rebuild one yourself, not too hard. You can get the broken gear from a guy on the Samba or take one from a donor speedo.

Basically finished the wiring. (3-4 days work) Bud wanted to have connectors to be able to remove hood without undoing all the wires. I have put in 7 weatherpack connectors. Seems to have worked well. Bud has the deluxe Bug harness from Rebel and I like their harnesses. (great customer service as well!) They do not come with a ground setup (they sell one though) but that is no big deal to make with a bus bar from a marine supplier.

Looks great Vince! I like clean wiring. Any difference between the ground setup from a marine shop and the one Rebel sells? Also, any alterations (besides the weatherpack connectors) needed? About to order mine here soon, and hope it comes out as clean as that. I realize that I could use the stock gauges, and fix the odometer, but I have already got my heart set on the Speedhut ones....

Thanks Brian! I am not sure what they sell but I am sure it is similar. I get the bus bar from my supplier (fiberglass, paint etc) and it is delivered to my door so it is easier for me. As to alterations, you need to jump the wire for the turn signal indicator to the turn signal switch wire if you do not use the original VW hazard switch. Also Bud wanted a toggle switch (SPST) to control his hazard lights (4 way) and I had to install a diode setup. I recommend the Rebel wire harness highly!

Worked hard over the weekend to get the Manx done.
Wiring done and tested, hood on with welting, windshield installed and top fitted on.
Still need to paint a few small things but am happy with the results.
I did have a question about the modified dash brace and what it looked like installed.

Finally was able to make the trip to the OBX to pick up our buggy this weekend. It's heading home for it's final stage (new engine transplant and a few other cosmetic changes). Just a little while longer before it roars to life again.
Vince did a fantastic job on the refurb and finished. He exceeded my expectations!!!!

More progress today out of the Martinez's garage.
I really like the previous version of the sidewinder with the removable glass pack so instead of buying a new one (when mine started showing some rust), I had it re-hot jet coated. The cost was about the same as buying a new one but I'm really pleased with the results (plus it comes with a lifetime warranty):

Here is my long block 1776 motor that was built by Vic Dawson of Keith's Auto Parts (http://www.keithsautoparts.com) in WV. It was special delivered to MOTB 2014 by Joe Wheeler and David Cash (thank you both very much). I had to fight off the crowd who thought this was going to be a raffle gift for the event

My motor has waited patiently for 4+ months to be mated with our buggy. Yesterday the wait was over and it breathed life for the first time (some of you will appreciate this moment - Sue looked at me like I had a third eye when I excitedly showed her). It purred during the cam break-in. We will be driving this weekend!!!
