Dog House Cooler

Don't stop now I have not started yet. What you say COOL TIN good or bad? As for the flaps I use them but I use a choke cable. I pull it out when the engin gets warm I push it in. Nate

So what color should we paint them? Black or White? Which color dissapates heat better? Is powder coating better than paint or is it the other way around? Does it really matter? Sorry. Couldn't resist. I guess this should be a topic for a different thread. However, I do recall this being discussed quite vigorously a while back. Thanks for breathing life into the forum. lol.

Nate[/QUOTE] OK Nate, lets put a few more miles on this topic,, but on one condition >>> I've just read your profile, WOW! I reckon you've got some cool (buggy) stories to tell & I want to hear about em,, DEAL?? :D RIGHT, back to this cooling thing, I have a question, does anyone know what type of cooling stats/flaps the Kubel type 82's had??,,,, pre bellows type thermostats for sure. Im thinking,,, as these vehicles served on the Russian front & in North Africa it must have been a good system to cope both climates. No Empi chrome back in those days. Having said that, rumour has it that a special model was designed for use in desert conditions,,, it had some higher spec parts over the ordinary Kubels, one of which was extra cooling equipment. Fortunately for the allies these Kubels got sent to the Russian front while Rommel had to make do with ordinary ones,,,,,,, no wonder they bloody lost!!! Mind you,,, they also say Geman captured Kubels were so popular with allied troops that the exchange rate become one Kubel for two Jeeps  ABSOLUTE RUBBISH IMO

Dog house cooler

Post by nroadrunner »

I know I'm old but not that old. But I'll go back to 1975 I had a 1972 buse that I had made in to a camper. I felt I should have a little more HP,so I built a 2 Lt. 78 crank and 90 barrels mild cam. dog house cooler small plats under barrels. Well it ran good but to hot. So what to due I'm a old motor cycle road racer. I got to thinking how did they keep them cool. The two wheel boys were all ways ahead of the 4 wheel racers Ahhhhh yes. Paint so I painted my barrel and heads flat motor cycle black.put cool tin on tryed again. I ran 30 degrees cooler. This was a good test I have a hill they call 8 mile hill. I run the same hill on all my tests. I take oil temp from two places and cyl. tem. not from under spark plug but from a place just as the exhaust gas leves the head. So you see paint and color can help Nate

Interesting stuff Nate, like Tom said this topic has been discussed but I don't remember seeing it on here. I guess chrome tin & fan shrouds cant help the cooling much either, being a biker guy I bet you must have burnt your legs a few times on chrome pipes, but the black ones seem to cool much faster.

Best fan housing to use is a Thing one complete with fan. The fan and shroud is bigger, the profile is lower and they have no heater outlets...saying that I've always used EMPI style 30hp type ones on Buggies because I just like the simple look of them. I've never had overheating problems but Liverpool's no where as near as hot as So Cal...I wish!!!

The "Thing" fan is the exact same fan that is used in the Bug with a doghouse cooler.
