Nose cone bushing removal

Post by Gene-C »

Greetings all, I decided to freshen up the nose cone seal/bushing on my swing arm transaxle. Bought a kit from CIP, but I'm having problems getting the old bushing out. It looks like it has a split in it, just like the replacement. But it seems pretty tight in the bore. Any suggestions/tips/hints?

I normally leave the rear bushing in and just change the front housing carrier/seal. If you must change it I would take a hack saw blade and gently scribe/cut that puppy in half.

Murz, The hacksaw trick worked great. Thanks! Just a little at a time until I was thru the bushing. Didn't even nick the nose cone. The new problem is the brass bushing/seal holder doesn't fit into the casting. The fit is way too loose. It won't stay in place. The kit says it's good for 61-79 and I believe this to be a '67 or '68 trans(backup light switch is there). Is my nose cone shot? It doesn't appear to be damaged by any previous owner or any kind of mechanical abuse.

JB weld it. the new bushing should out last the buggy or the trans. MURZ

You can also use a center punch to make some dimples in the nosecone so it will hold the bushing in.

If I replace the whole nose cone, do I need a gasket where it bolts to the trans, or can silicone be used ? A friend gave me a blown swing axle to be used for parts. His nose cone is much tighter than mine.

The nosecone comes from the factory with a gasket. I have never had any luck getting RTV to sealing gear oil very well. Mopar does make/sell a special RTV especially for Hypoid gear oil that works very well and might seal the nosecone.
