What to do with the "lip"

Post by TMc2548 »

Around the outside edge of the pan is a small lip, approximately ?" in width that runs fore and aft. It currently poses no problem as my pan is ot yet finished but as soon as I'm ready to paint I need to either cut it off, roll it under, or leave it alone. What is the common action taken with the lip in question?

Typically ti is just left as is. On one buggy I built I installed a 1" sq.tube under the edge of the pan, then I rolled the edge of the pan under the sq. tube and tacked it to the tube.

Is that edge around the floors and side rails on the original construction or the lip on the center tunnel itself? If its the one in the tunnel, I used a 1 1/2 angle iron to give the tunnel more strenght and to add a wider lip to attach sheet pan floors,,,,,, Im still in the build process.

I'm thinking Tom is talking about the outer edge, not the tunnel. I did the same as Jerry, square tube with that little outside edge heated and bent under, then welded in place. Bear in mind that I had to cut away most of my "holy" floor pan and replace with aluminium diamond plate and the edge was still floppy, until reinforced. Amazing how much stronger the entire pan became as soon as that job was completed. And, it looks really "clean" with that little edge rolled under.

I like the idea of rolling the lip under, will try on my next buggy. I dont like the idea of cutting the lip off, this would only weaken the pan.

Thanks for the replies. I think that for now I will leave it as is along with adding the square tubing in the outer channel.
