Our first transaxle was from Rancho. Never had any issues with it. When we changed over to IRS, they did the conversion. The only issue we had was that it would not down-gear smoothly when it was still tight. Once it was broken in though, no problems at all.

Rancho is ok. I've not heard any horror stories.
I just like Jim Kaforski at Der Transmissions in Anahiem.

I've never used Rancho, so I can't speak about them. I've used the old Trans-Form (now gone?) out of Long Beach back in 1990 and that dang thing still runs great. One builder I am impressed with out in Cantil, CA. (near Mojave and California City) is Buggyworld. These guys build high quality stuff. I don't know if they're inferior, better, or worse than Rancho, but thought I'd throw in my 2!
It sounds like you're looking for their T-1003 with a starting price of $1,250.00 without axles.
