I recently built a new motor for our Manxter and decided to
use a Kennedy Stage 1 clutch.

After taking the buggy for a spin, I immediately noticed how stiff the
new clutch was. After driving it to work on the back roads I realized I wasn’t
quite happy with the new clutch. Not only was my leg tired but the ball of my
foot was sore. I could only imagine the added pressure on the clutch
cable.
This could lead to the
cable breaking.

Something had to been done.

I remembered reading an article in Hot VW’s about Brazilian
VW’s having a long clutch release arm. After a lot of research I was able to
locate a source for these arms(NOS). These arms are 100mm long (compared to the
stock 73 mm) and fit early type 1 bug and type 2 bus transmissions that have a
16mm clutch shaft.
Installation
(with the engine out) is fairly easy. First, remove the clip locking the arm to
the shaft, slide the arm off the shaft, replace the arm and return spring with
the longer one, and replace the clip. Now just adjust the clutch cable and you
are ready to go. The added length on the clutch arm increases leverage and
reduces the pedal effort dramatically. This makes the Kennedy clutch now feel
like a stock one. The Manxter is a lot more fun to drive again and the wife is
happy too.

If anyone else is interested in one of these clutch arms, I
do have a few available.

Good tip but just be aware that sometimes on regular Manx bodies there's barely enough clearance for the short type of arm. I've had to put a 90 degree bend them to 'shorten' them before now to clear without cutting a clearance hole in the rear 'seat' area of the body.

Just look under the back of your car and see how much clearance you've got already...I've got about an inch on my Manx 2 but the shorter of the two pictured ones was catching the body of a one I built that was moulded off a Signiture Manx shell and needed bending.

I checked under the manxter there is about an inch clearance between the rear body area and the long clutch arm. I run a 002 bus trans tilted up 10 degrees. I will have to ask my father to check under his manx to see how much clearance he has. I guess if you were to have a body lift there shouldn't be any issues. Doran

Last weekend there was a vw show in ventura and were a few buggys there. 4 of them had plenty of clearance for the long arm, but one of them didn't. None were original manxs and none of them had  a body lift. So I guess it comes down  checking under each buggy to see if there is enough room or not Doran
