I think I need some help here . . I finally broke down an installed a Cobra 29 LTD Classic CB in the Burro, but I can't tell if it's working right. With the freeways being several miles away from me, I can't seem to raise anybody when I test the thing. But, then again, I haven't been on a CB since "Smokey and the Bandit" was playing in theatres! I've tried calibrating the SWR and, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the meter over to the left side of the scale. I tried grounding the antenna (I think . .I ran a ground wire from the base of the antenna to a good chassis ground) and still nothing. I've also tried moving the mast up and down within the bottom coil at the base . .all to no effect. I'd welcome advice from anyone who knows how to match the antenna to the receiver / transmitter. Is there some trick to tell if this thing is working well, or at all? Otherwise, I'll wait until I get to Baker to see if I can be heard by the group gathering there. I just have a bad feeling that maybe it isn't working at all. Thanks!

Hey Gene . . . I have to agress with you that it's the mount (which is aluminum) combied with the lack of ground plane in the buggy. I just took your advice and ordered a Firestik II NGP. I did read that it comes with a tuned/matched 17 ft. cable that has to remain in tact. That'll probably wrap around the buggy three times:) I'll hook it up Wednesday and see if that does the trick. Thanks for the help!

I went to radioshack and bought a $30 cb with a $40 marinetype antenna. Works great!
