Special tool, of course!

I?m looking for some suggestions. I decided to re-do my dash board and ran into a small problem. The wiper switch and light switch are vintage ?66 VW. There was a little tightening collar that had to be removed to take the switches out. The collar has a slot on either side of the shaft. I looked in the Bentley book and it says there is a special tool to remove the collar. I used a small screw driver and a hammer to remove the collar (put the blade of the screw driver in one slot and tapped it with a hammer). Now I?m getting ready to put the switches back in and would like not to repeat the process. Does anyone know of a ?shade tree mechanic? trick that I could use (without having to get a ?special? tool)? Thanks for the help. A long time ago, when I restored a 62' bug for my daughter, I used a long billed needle nose plier to set the retainers tight, holding the handles tight and putting a screw driver across and twisting, you'll get the hang of it, or use some right angle needle nose pliers, also an adjustable spanner wrench works. It all worked for me.

I have a pair of old needle nose pliers that I tack welded in position just to remove and install VW switches. They work as well as can be expected.

Guys, thanks for the suggestion of the needle nose pliers. I think I'll give that a try. Bud

Jim, Jerry, The bent needle nose pliers did the trip perfectly. Here's a pict of what I was working on. I re-did my dash and relocated everything (including the switches). I never messed with any VW switches before, so I'm no longer a virgin  Thanks again, Bud

The dash looks great. I like the use of the VW chrome, it adds a bit of class.
