Oil Temperature sensor

Post by vincent9993 »

I searched but nothing came up, I would like to have an oil temperature sensor on my engine. I bought the VDO 2 1/16 300F OIL TEMP GAUGE - ROYALE COCKPIT SERIES from CIP1 and forgot the sensor. They do offer many size but I can't get my head around where I would mount it. Image I also bougnt the VDO 2 1/16 FUEL GAUGE ELECTRICAL / UNIVERSAL SENDER - ROYALE COCKPIT SERIES, I was hoping the sender would come with it but it did not. Is there a recomended VDO Fuel gauge that will fit my gas tank? Image

Do you have a add on sump underneath the engine? If you do, look closely, usually there is a boss on the side that can be drilled & tapped for a oil temp sender. If not, you can use a dip stick sender or a oil drain plug sender. I think VDO can supply those, so it should work with your gauge. Do you have a stock fuel tank? VDO has senders for stock & other fuel tanks. I didn't get to see your car when you visited last summer, so that is why I am asking all the questions. Tom

Thanks Tom, I figured you would reply! It's hard for me to tell the origin of the fuel tank, I've uploaded a photo. I got this info from CIP1: "Requires a universal sender that does not come with the gauge. For gauge - see part number VDO-226-001. (VDO GAUGES) " Image VDO-226-001 - VDO FUEL TANK SENDER UNIVERSAL- FOR CUSTOM FITTING - ( WILL NOT BOLT DIRECTLY INTO ANY VW TANK ) We recommend that you also buy the VDO-226-451 -VDO FUEL TANK SENDER INSTALLATION KIT W/ FLANGE / GASKET & HARDWARE . Custom installation is required with the universal fuel tank sending unit. Three of the five mounting holes will need to be slotted. This sender only works with VDO fuel gauges designed for the universal sender. So I guess this will take care of the fuel tank. As for the Oil temperature, I do not have the sump extension, Are you saying the I can use the oil plug ans screw in the oil temp sensor? I just installed this: BILLET LOOK SUMP PLATE Perhaps this BILLET OIL PUMP COVER can be used to screw in the oil temp sender? I just feel a little scared mounting the oil sender in the oil plug. Perhaps I misunderstood. Thanks again.

Your'e welcome. When there is a technical issue that I can help out with, I will post something to help. If not, I just watch, wait to see what some other "expert" comes up with, and try to learn from it. The sender in the CIP1 catalog that is p/n VDO-323-055 is the right threads to replace your oil drain plug. The only disadvantage I can see is that you loose your magnetic drain plug in the process. But, you can make up for this by sticking a small magnet on your steel sump plate or gluing one on if you have an aluminum one. The oil pump cover you referenced is to send the oil out to a remote filter & cooler (which is a good idea), you might not get a good reading for oil temp there. Tom
