I have a friend that bought an engine from Jake for his Porsche 356 kit car. He is very pleased with the engine/performance and the service from Jake.

Jake is currently in the process of building me a one of a kind 2270 cc EFI 180 HP screamer for my '69 manx. I've been working for almost a year with him on its construction. Jake is without a doubt the most honest engine builder I've ever have the fortune of working with. His web site is extremely informative. Also go to the "ShopTalkForum" thru his site. It will answer all sorts of questions. I do know that between his engine build for Hot VW and Dune Buggy's May issue and Sacramento Bug O Rama, and the set of engines (mine's included), Jake is very busy. If you want the very best in a Type IV engine kit, you've gone to the right guy. Honestly, I think, Jake is too busy to talk to everyone, but I doubt that any one of his customer would not agree "he's the best in kits, parts, turn key, or service." THIS GUY KNOWS "Type IV"

The problem is I was ready to order a crank and rods, but he would not give me the time of day. I am building a 2270 or 2316 and wanted info on what crank and rods I needed. So now I am not sure what I am going to do. Might just change the heads and keep it stock. :drinking:

"If you build it, they will come..." I have run across the same thing on more than one occassion. Get a good work reputation, then get gobbs of people asking lots of questions and buying volumes of parts, then suddenly, they become too big for their own breeches. Gene Berg is like this. Won't give you the time of day, but will sell you top quality stuff at a top quality price. Their words of wisdom... "Go to the web site...". Kind of a turn off, but if you need it, then you bite the bullit and just do it.

I bought my engine from Berg and found the same thing. Once I paid for it, they were more then helpfull. I did have a lot of questions. I just wrote them all down and made sure I didn't call or go down there when they were out to lunch. Hope it was all worth it $$$$$ I'm firing it up for the first time this weekend.

I was just out looking at my type 4. It is straight from the van with efi , etc. I was wondering how much tin I can trim off without toasting the engine????????? I plan to leave the rear cooling fan set up vs a belt driven fan. It looks like I should put something on it to force air through the oil cooler. ????????????????????????????????????????????????? I was also thinking of moving the alternator to 12 o'clock above crank pulley so that it does not process so much sand..??

Well FUBAR, I can't tell you anything on the coolinging the stock setup. I have one of Bergmans cooling setups for mine and it should not have any problems.

No problems until you loose a belt anyway. Part of the reason I went with this engine was a failure resistant cooling system. How much was the conversion with alternator?
