VW column

Which year did the column have the ignition switch built into it?? I have a standard GM column now but I am wanting to go to something simpler, but I dont want to dash mounted ignition switch. any other Ideas would be great too. thanks

1968 and newer VW's had the switch in the column.

Newmanx...then 67' and before/earlier just had the steering lock low in the shaft and the turn signal in the head, but the ignition remote?thanks!

The '67 also had the high/low headlight dimmer switch on the turn signal arm, maybe another year too (66' or '68). I've got the '67.

Although there were aftermarket steering column locks available for the 67 and earlier columns.

How do you guys think something like this would work out for a column support. It also has any ignition switch built into it. I have contacted them to get the deminsions of of it. Has anyone used a set up like this before?? Thanks http://www.est1946.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=182

That's way cool but you would have to cut the dash out of the buggy to use it.

I was thinking to mount it behind the buggy out of sight, might make starting it a pinch....i dunno I will be able to tell alot more once they respond with dimensons.

Just got an email back from so-cal speed shop. That column support with the ignition switch has been discontinued:x .....what a bummer.....I was getting all pumped about it. Oh well back to the drawing board:help:

How does this one look? It looks as if you can mount the ignition switch in the housing. Jeremy, I plan on using a GM column on my buggy project also. What modifications did you make to the GM unit to use in your buggy? Scotty
