Manx SR Roll cage

Post by shaihulud »

These are pictures of the roll cage that I have built to fit inside the body work of my SR. I needed to do most of that to be able to fit a high seat belt attachment. It also includes side intrusion bars for the doors. This is the first time that I am sending pictures to this forum. I hope it works.

Thank you. It took weeks to make that. It's definitely a one off. Even the engineer who is inspecting the car for registration asked me if all of it was my work. It is. I tacked it together using an old stick welder and a much better welder than I am welded it for me with a MIG welder. When the car is together almost none of it will be visible as it is designed to fit between the body tub and the outer panels. I am amazed at how often during construction there was a good fit of a part of the structure, just where I needed it to be. I would never want to make another. I agonised over nearly every part to get a cohesive whole. Because the body has a permanently affixed Targa top I did not need to build a traditional roll cage for registration, which is good as I did not want to change the look of the interior with lots of tubing in the cabin. It's in 4 pieces. There is the main structure, two small pieces up the sides of the top, where you can see a nut welded to a plate for the seat belts and then a girder like part across the top. It's fully triangulated, and gusseted and bolts together. I am still astonished that I have succeeded as well as I have. Sometimes it would take nearly all day to fit two pieces of steel to it.
