Flat-4 shifter
Flat-4 shifter
I came across this the other night. I thought it was pretty cool, and I think I might like to run it in my buggy. has anyone ever used this shifter before?? if so what do you think of it. It doesnt give any deminsions on it. Does anyone know if it is like SUPER tall. Do you guys think it would look retarded in a buggy?? let me know what you guys think. thanks http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1252 Or if you know of any other great ideas for shifters, throw them my way.
If it is made in China , you might want to pass on it. The Scat "Drag-fast" shifters are about $100, look cool, and have a pretty neat reverse lockout that you pull up with two fingers. They can be difficult to adjust and get used to. I had to die grind the oval holes a bit to get 1st gear without a struggle. But that may be an unrelated issue. I am pretty happy with it now.
they are ok
I used to run an Original Empi Eliminator in my buggy and it didn't look out of place and was too tall but I never did find it a very positive shifter, these repro items are built to the same design (I checked out a friends) so I imagine they are also not that great. The Gene Berg Shifter is the best unit on the market by a long way - I also ran one of these for a while but replaced it as it wasn't retro enough but it was and still is by far the best VW type shifter ever made. Plus it can be brought in different heights so you can match it perfectly to your own car/buggy although the stock VW height unit is pretty much perfect for a Manx.
I have a Flat 4 shifter in my Baja and I love it. It was a little tricky getting it setup but once I got the adjustment right I haven't had to touch it. I have about 30,000 miles on it. I took the Scat drag-fast out of the Baja and thew it in the swap meet pile. I had to disassemble it and clean it after every trip to the dunes because the reverse lever would hangup and keep me from shifting into a forward gear. The Flat 4 shifter might be a bit tall for a buggy though. I have a BugPack shifter in my Manx and my sandrail (almost 20 years) and I have had as much trouble with the BugPak shifters as I have had with my Berg shifter I had in my street bug, None! The Berg shifter is nice and well built but the BugPak shifter shifts as well and for less then 1/4 the price. I will be putting the Berg shifter in my Siggy Manx only because I have it and it's a nice 30 year old piece of memorabilia and probably the first thing I bought from Gene Berg, otherwise the bugpak would be my choice.
