Help with a Tow'd

Post by Gene-C »

We are looking for information on a couple pieces on a Tow'd. We have joined the club and gotten instructions from Winnie on the Tow'd. We are looking for the exact location for the serial number on a Tow'd we have two sets of holes one set of 4 and one pair that are next to the pedals but there is no number there. Next question relates to the shifter mount, from what I have seen we need to build a "tunnel top" from the steering brake mount to the front where the pedals are mounted. Is this typically metal or fiberglass? Last but no least is the windshield the one we have must be a home made jobbie made with angle iron and square tubing, extremely heavy! Where can we see about getting a replacement windshield. Our intention is to stay as close to original as we can other than from what I here there is some extra support needed for the frame tube. Any information you can provide to us would be great!! We're anxious to get started but want to make sure we good plan in mind before we jump in. Shauna H & H Sand Sports

I have one of the metal console tops that I could take to a fabrication shop near me and get a quote if you'd like. I think you could get an undrilled one and match it to the holes already in the body. Do you have the metal pedal bucket? It should have been welded to the console top.

These pics are great! Our Tow'd has 4 holes where you have a plate so unfortunately we don't have the serial number for this Tow'd. I did find that Bug Shields as a possiblity to get a new windshield from thanks for that. Now the tunnel issue, if you can get me the dimensions I think we can make one to match the pictures you have sent. It looks like each side has about a 1" lip and as far as length we've got holes already there in the fiberglass that we can use a guide also. But dimensions would be great! I'll have to look at the pics again and see if we can tell how the pedal mount box is welded to the tunnel. As far as getting a pedal mount box, we run a small sand rail, dune buggy, VW shop here in Nebraska and we get these in for our sand rail chassis so I think we should be able to make one of those work. Thanks again for the help I'll probably be back with more questions............. Shauna

These pics plus the diagram you drew should give us a good base to fab a tunnel. Thanks for your quick response and all the info. If there's anything else you think of that we need to watch for or do while we are working on the Tow'd let me know. I'll try to post some progress pictures as we go. I knew this was the place to find some help!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shauna

I think the console in Old Towd's picture may have been a replacement. I've owned two Towds and neither of the consoles tapered toward the back like his. Also the sides of the metal console were shorter than his and there was no need for a cutaway to clear the seat. On my metal console the sides are 1 1/16" long, from the top face of the console to the bottom edge of the lip. His are an 1 1/2" long. The inside width of my console is 4 1/8", its whole length from front to back. Does any one else have one that tapers like Old Towd's?

Wow CairoManx, your right there are different consoles. I looked at some photos I had and you can tell there are some narrow and wide ones. I never thought mine wasn't original it looked so old and sad. Mine being wider has to taper in or it takes up seat room. I wonder if Bruce can clear this up for us or all you tow'd owners take a look and see which one you have and I'll try to dig deeper into this. I surely don't want to send someone down the wrong path.
