Cost of shiny enignes?

Post by Gene-C »

Hey guys. Here's my situation. I have a 73 super beetle that i finished last year, and drove around all summer with whats left of my hair blowing in the wind. Winters here so its time to upgrade things. The enigne is a stock 1600dp. Runs great, no smoke, small oil leak and a flat spot in the carb. Has allot of road grim. Its to far gone to just steam clean and put some chrome on it. SO my question is, would it be cheaper to just but a new (or used) engine that has the things i want or rip this thing apart and spend many hours cleaning, replacing seals, push rod tubes, and buying everything else to make it what i want? Im not looking for a ton of power, stock is even ok but i need to clean it up. Anyone ever gone through this before? Any info would be great. Thanks

Like old Triumphs,,,,BSA's,,, Norton's,,,AJS's,,Matchless etc,etc Vee Dubs like to leave their mark, with a spot of oil here and there. I have a dog that does the same, I would just ignore it,,,n keep it topped up with oil,, if its not too bad. Most times its just rocker covers, or push-rod tube seals. As for the,,, whats left of your hair blowing in the wind problem,, if you find a cure,, let me know  All my head hair has now found its way into my nose :( WHY???? I want the damn stuff back on my HEAD, :x

as they say you don't loose your hair on your head. It's just growing in and coming out somewhere else (nose, ears, back).

If my hair keeps growing out of my ears, pretty soon Ill be able to do a pretty nifty comb over, just have to figure out how to keep it in place while driving the buggy. As for what to do with your motor, it depends on how well you want to get acquainted with it. Just remember, one thing leads to another, and pretty soon its not just cleaning it up any more.

hahah you guys are killing me here. Im only 35. (but yes im losing my hair) After the hair remark i dont think anyone got what i was saying. That does make sense "one thing leads to another". Thats what im affraid of. All i want really is a nice clean buggy with an engine that will look like i put some effort into it. In fact if you have one of those sitting in the garage im whilling to pay for it. Any offers?

Its not such a big job,,maybe with 1641 barrels & pistons, check out the heads, replace pushrod tubes n seals, f/wheel seal, oil cooler seals etc etc, if you motor is breathing heavy that will cause an oily engine, new barrels n pistons should sort that. But use the best quality parts, most of that,,,made in Taiwan stuff, will just give you more probs. Paint all the cooling tin,, get a carb rebuild kit. Sorted one very clean Vee Dubb motor  Now back to our hair :help: :D
