First Manxvair

Post by CairoManx »

Recently a person was selling a Manxvair on the Samba(its sold now). It was made in 1968 which is earlier than any other Manxvair I've seen. The serial number is definitely genuine but it doesn't match other known Manxvair prefixes, which are CC for Corvair front suspension or CV for VW front suspension. This Manx has a VW front end so the number should be CV but it actually looks like C0(C-zero not C-oh). So then the serial number is 0101. BF Meyers usually used 4 digit serial numbers, like on the Manxes and Tow'ds, which began at 0101 instead of at 0001. I spoke with Richard Brown about it and we both believe its the very first Manxvair, or at least the first Manxvair serial number. We think the C may have actually stood for Con-Ferr, the company that made the Manxvair chassis. So CV would have indicated Con-Ferr/VW front end and CC would indicate Con-Ferr/Corvair front end. As Richard hypothesizes, "They probably started out with a "C" only in the begining until it created problems with the guys in the warehouse trying to put an order together or even with the invoicing, inventory, etc. then later added another letter (C or V) to designate which chassis belongs with the certain body. I really think that(C0101) is a one letter prefix serial number. But it's all guesswork, Who Really knows?" http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... ?id=613996 Image
