license plate housing

Post by manxfwin »

As anyone tried using a piece of aluminum to fill the space between the taillights on a Manx instead of the stainless steel pc. used in the original ass'y instructions?I had intended to leave this area untouched but after looking at it for a year or so I like the looks of a chrome 65 license housing and the the plate mounted below with the space filled with a pc. of aluminum sheet. Will the aluminum work,is it rigid enough to mount a license plate and Manx frame or should the plate be mounted on a VW plate bracket? I have not installed the support tubes because there hasn't been any flexing in this area since this buggy only gets used on the street.Any ideas, tips or past experience will be appreciated. Thanks,Dave B

I just ran a 1" wide piece of aluminum across the bolts from the support rods and mounted the license plate to the aluminum and tucked it under the body. Image

Back in the 70s, I made an aluminum copy of the stainless panel after I had misplaced it. I mounted my original black and yellow license plate with my original B.F. Meyers frame on it. I remember hearing a loud noise while driving down the freeway but not realizing what it was, kept driving. I noticed what was missing when I got home.

Something like 16ga. aluminum should work fine. Why not glue a circle of Scotchbrite to an old engine valve and 'engine turn' it with your pistol drill?
