Has anybody ever switched a T-4 from EFI to carb?

Post by fubar »

After seeing that movie "little Miss Sunshine" I decided to abuse my donor 79 bus a little more before I flip it over and cut the transaxle out. The Boch EFI is the most likely cause of its problems so I was going to throw a Weber on it and see how it does. Question(s) where are the fuel pumps on those beasts? Is it possible to use the EFI pump if I t- it off the return line? (I left the lower part of the manifold on and I am changing the plenum) Should I leave the "brain" plugged in? Is the cam that much different EFI to carbureted?

[font=Verdana]I converted an EFI type 4 to dual carburetors and used a Bosche 050 distributor and an electric fuel pump. I didn't use the brain box in my beetle, I am not sure if it controls anything else on your bus but you won't need it to control the engine. The EFI fuel pump runs at too high of pressure, you might be able to use a regulator but I just purchased a new pump that I think ran at 3psi.

The fuel pump and fuel filter are near the fuel tank outlet under the bus. I trying to remember but I think it is on the left side. Fuel pump puts out way to much pressure to control it for a carb setup. Needs to be changed. Cam is the same on FI and carb. Different cam is automatic transmission bus. Just plug the return line. Dual carbs work better than the Holley/Weber setup. If strapped for cash use what you have. It just that many people have tried tuning them and is very hard to get it to work under all conditions since the intake runners are long.

Thank you for the info. It just needs to work well enough to use around town. No way I would take it on the interstate...You sit in front of the front wheels and are about an inch from whatever you might crash into. The only safety feature is that it would not be going very fast at impact. And it feels like driving a forklift . The kids love the stupid thing.

I am still doing battle with this stupid bus.........I gave up on the progressive weber and bought a set of dual 34 ict webers. Now the problem I have is getting the bottom nuts on the manifolds. I tried using a mirror and a flashlight that clamps on my hat. But decided to go to the store and get some beer and think about it . Perhaps some smaller nuts??? Wrench size is 13mm threads are about 6-8mm has anyone dealt with this before on a t-4?
