Quick disconnect and early steering column
Has anyone tried to use this quick disconnect with the early style steering column??? (67 or before, the one that is nice and clean with the switch low in the shaft)
i was looking into them and found out that the race type weld-on connects are not legal for street use in PA (or even recommended for street by manufatureres). grant has a bolt on one for street and i think momo had one i was looking at. but both needed an adapter and would extend the wheel out toward the driver about 3 inches. so i figured it defeated the purpose for me (of easier access into the buggy).

I have an after market steering shaft in my buggy and I added one before cutting the shaft to length, to fit my profile. I like it, a theft deterrent and makes it easier to work under the dash etc. I can post a photo, if needed. :2cents: Jimbo
Mike, While your doing your rebuild, I would cut the steering shaft to the legnth that suits you. I cut 2" off of mine. It was easy with an abrasive cut off tool. Just be careful not to cut the shaft too short. You dont want to hit your knuckles on the dash when you turn the wheel. I actuall cut mine twice to get the right legnth, then I cut the split for the pinch bolt.
I have the MOMO adapter and disconect, just so I could keep the Momo race wheel the car came with. The adapter was already there, the disconect cost me about $150. It is very nice, good quality compared to the hex type. Don't know if it is legal, I got it for theft prevention. Not too many thieves run around with that style wheel, but vice grips would steel the car just as well. I think you can forget about a wheel center horn button with the removable wheel too.
Ok then should I order it or not, my order is pending because of this item, but I was planing on using the early column and needed to know if it works..... Still dont know regardless of it being legal or not,,,that doesnt matter.. Can anyome compare measurements so I know measuremenst of the column and the quick disconect?
the issue i read about was the two different types of disconnect. one (like the one shown) is a race/offroad type. that comes with a pin disconnect which can easily come out- and the wheels falls off in your lap! the other type is for on road use. it has a key disconnect is almost impossible to have come out accidentally.
The one shown in the photo is a weld on style. I have one on my sand buggy. They are ok. If you have the factory splines and want to use them, go with the Momo or = to. It is way cooler if you have the money. Plus you don't have to worry about weld quality if you worry about such things, or do not weld all the time. I can send a photo if you are desperate to see tha momo style, I just need to charge my camera an hike my fat ass out to the winter buggy haus.
