not pretty, but finally running!

well, got it going, so now begins the dmv saga. the car was registered as a 1971 spcn. last tagged in 1985. i've started with the dmv as a 2007 spcn, they told me no smog. the laughs on me, the referee says yep! and because it's a dual port I have to smog to 1974 beetle (the engine has no vw #'s, it says BSAUL) with all it's crap! doesen't that just beat all, a car that was registered just fine in california for umpty ump years, then let sit for a few, now needs smog! #@$%&* dmv!......anywayI seem to have a few choices, 1-find a 1965 motor for bi-annual smog, 2-try for 1 of 500 exempt certs jan 1st, or my personal favorite, find a $2-500 vw and use the "hump" and title from it! well, i'll figure it out. jason

Upgrade to EFI and it will pass any 1974 carburated engine emission specs not to mention the increase in performance.

well, calif dosen't work that way. I have to have EXACTLY the equipment that a 1974 vw had (according to the referee). It can be clean as a whistle out the tail pipe, but if it dosen't have just one of the items, it fails. how stupid is that! the bottom line is clean air, but if the airs dirtier with the equipment, it passes! arggggggggggggggggg!

well, I believe it is, but there has been a couple of modifications. 1- the spare tire well was modified. 2- the lisc "hump" was cut out. I sent the pictures to bruce and winnie and got a reply that due to mods and without seeing it in person, the answer was no. It has the same windshield as bill schusters, the abs dash that was in it (crumpled when removing) had the fuse panel same as bills. It's very heavy glass and has the tubes under that were glassed in vacume(?) hose. and the lower lip in the rear looks just like bills also. the body is rough and needs paint. I just primered it to get rid of that "calico" look.jason

It would be funny to go in for inspection with a smog exempt motor if you could find one that leaks a lot of oil and smokes real bad. It does not take too long to change an engine on a buggy.

I like it,,, in fact I love it,,,the more I look at it the more I want to own it myself :rock: So if the smog thing don't work out,, try California shipping Co at Stanton :rock:

They used to make up a new number when they issued a special construction number and attach a tag with that number to the frame. If they're not using your pan number, throw away the 2007 special constuction paperwork and do what everyone else does now, get it registered as a VW beetle, of whatever year the pan is.

the origional vw vin# is gone. there is a 1"x3" metal tag welded on with the numbers stamped in. I think the easiest way to go about this is get another car and use it's pan, i've done it before, not too hard. this is my 5th buggy. the last two were ground up builds, but I made them too nice to offroad. this one was just put together to use. by the way, has anybody seen these cars? I sold the yellow one to a guy in AZ. in 2004 (i think) and the white one to a guy in rancho cucamonga, ca. in 1998 (in think) getting old and have CRS! ha! jason
