Clean Up the Ridge Route - CUTTR Event -POSTPONED-

Post by 5150bossman »

Due to the COVID-19 Virus outbreak, out of an abundance of caution, this clean-up event has been postponed and will be rescheduled whenever things settle down.

Just trying to get the word out on this worthy cleanup event.

For those that don't know about it, the historic Ridge Route is the original road that runs on the East side of the 5 freeway between Southern California and the Central Valley (Santa Clarita to Bakersfield).

There have been (3) Ridge Route highways since its creation. The original 1915 highway; the 1933 3 & 4-lane alternate Highway 99; and today's I-5 freeway completed in 1970 (covering significant portions of both of the older roads in the process).

The original road was a technical feat at the time, has been credited with functionally connecting Southern California with Central California, and potentially kept the State from being divided in two. Today, the portion that still exists runs between Santa Clarita and Gorman.

In 2005, the Ridge Route roadway was severely damaged by storms and temporarily closed. Due to various reasons, the roadway has remained closed and, while the damaged portion has been reconstructed, general maintenance ceased.

Finally, this year, the Ridge Route Preservation Organization (RRPO) has made an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service to be aloud to start maintaining the roadway again.

In anticipation of getting the roadway reopened sometime in the future, RRPO will be hosting its first roadway maintenance event on the Ridge Route, known as Clean Up The Ridge Route (CUTTR). This event involves potentially strenuous activities removing dirt and rocks from the roadway, clearing drains of debris, removing or cutting plants along the roadway that present hazards, and other similar work. RRPO will need volunteers for this work! Supplies, such as picks, shovels, clippers, wheelbarrows, brooms, and other items may also be needed.

-THIS IS A VOLUNTEER CLEANUP EVENT, NOT A BUGGY/OFFROAD EVENT-

The event will have a short safety orientation and general description of what needs to be done. If you’re interested in donating time, equipment, or anything else to the event, you can either contact RRPO directly at http://www.ridgeroute.org/cuttr/, or contact me at mikeandmelz01@gmail.com . I am coordinating a group through Point Mugu 4WD Club, and am not affiliated with the RRPO. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With the California governor recommending that all people in the state shelter in place for the immediate future, this clean-up event has been postponed and will be rescheduled as the situation improves.
