Geocaching & Dune Buggies

Post by rzeller »

This thread kind of ties into Mel's latest thread on "other hobbies". My wife and I just discovered geocaching a couple of weekends ago and we are now hooked. I was wondering if there were any other buggie folks that also geocache? If so, I'd like to ask a favor. I've created a few travel bugs that I would like to start out on the west coast or somewhere else a far distance from NC. If you would be willing to start one of my bugs out for me, please PM me. My goal is to have other buggie folks to find my bugs, take pictures of my bug with their buggy, and then move it on back toward NC. Please let me know if you would like to help me out. Thanks, Bud

I do Geocaching sometimes! I just took my last buggy desert camping / caching / exploring trip until spring, though. The Mojave Desert gets too darn cold at night for tent camping! I live in Orange County, CA, so I can still help you if you like. I can even find a cache right near the ocean so your bug can travel from sea to shining sea! :D Let me know!

Bob, Not a stupid question at all. Up to about 4 weeks ago I had no idea either (I just bought a Garmin GPS unit). Basically, it's a high-tech scavenger hunt. It started back in 2000 and has grown worldwide. There is one central site for the madness. It is www.geocaching.com. For a good description, check out this link to the FAQ http://www.geocaching.com/faq/ It's a very quick and easy read. FYI, I've created a few (four so far) Dune Buggy Travel Bugs that I am seeding around the country. Once they are in place, I'll post an update and people can track their movement around the US. One man's craziness is another man's hobby :D Bud

A few years back, I was watching a travel bug that started in So. Cal. It had the goal of getting to Mardi-gras. Over a couple of years, I watched as it made it to New York, then back to the West coast, up to Seattle, then back to L.A. It had a great time along the way too. Lots of pics with the people taking it around. Never did find out if it ever made it to Mardi-gras though... .

I'm hoping these TB's will have a good time along the way and meet up with some of the buggy people in this club. One of the reasons that I'm going to post the ID's (and how to track them) is so that buggy folks can see if one of them travels into their areas. Below is a picture of what the TB looks like. They Have Started Their Journey

Post by rzeller »

For Those That Might Be Interested: With the help of a couple buggy friends, I've got two of four buggy Travel Bugs (TB) placed and ready to travel. I'm providing you the tracking numbers (and instructions on how to find them) so that maybe one of these TBs will make it into your helping hands. One TB is in FL and the other is in CA. The goal is to meet buggy people along the way and get the TB's back home to NC. Please help me out if you can. Instructions: go to this web page: http://www.geocaching.com/. On the left side of the page (toward the top) click on "Trackable Items". From the tracking page enter one of the numbers below in the "Enter the Geocoin or Travel Bug tracking number" area. You will then be able to see what cache the TB is in. TB1RAYF (in CA) TB1RAWB (in FL) There's a couple more coming (another one in CA and one in the north east). Thanks to my helpers. Image more: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v444/ ... ec%2015th/ and i don't think that this video of where it is hidden will give it away :D http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... 2625&hl=en

Travel Bug(gies) Update

Post by rzeller »

It's time for a quick update on the three travel buggies that are circulating around the US. If you happen to be into geocaching (or are interested in starting), have a look to see if one of these bug(gies) are in your area. Help put some miles on them. Thanks, Bud Click on the links below: In CA (this one has traveled 113.1 miles so far - started in CA): http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?tracker=TB1RAYF In Ohio (this one has traveled 1488.2 miles - started in FL): http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?tracker=tb1rawb In NJ (this one has been picked up but not placed back yet; no miles - started in NJ) http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?tracker=tb1rayg
