Nos 1986 Trans Rebuild ?

Hi All I work with a guy who has a rebuilt 67 type 1 trans with axels for sale, It was rebuilt in 1986 at the cost of $1798.46 (I have the receipt) and never used, it's been in his garage under a tarp it has over 1303.00 in new parts including ,ring & pinion 3:88, main shaft, 1st & 2ed slider,hub,steel fork, 3rd & 4th slider, side gear,pinion bearing, HD side cover,1:48 3rd gear, 1:04 4th gear, super diff, new seals, boots gaskets & more. Now the question ! He wants 600.00 for it and is it worth it ? , what would you do to put this in service ?, is the gearing ok for a buggy? THANKS Stewart

Sounds like a deal if you are willing to take a risk . You can sink a bunch of money in a tranny and destroy it in a second. Better if someone else sank the money...My trans is working well after sitting 30 years outdoors.

With the 3.88 R&P it is a little different in ratios than most gear boxes in buggies. A 1967 bug came with a 4.125 R&P 3.88 R&P 4.125 R&P 1st gear 3.80 14.725 15.675 2nd gear 2.06 7.975 8.489 3rd gear 1.48 5.735 stock 3rd 1.26 5.202 4th gear 1.04 4.030 stock 4th 0.89 3.667 CB Performance web site as a gear ratio chart you can use to figure out for tire size, RPM, MPH you using the gear ratios. The 1st and 2nd will not work really well with large diameter tires and small engine for out in the dirt. Would work great on the street.

Thanks for the info ! Joseph I should have given more buggy info, its a fairly fresh 1835 motor and I'm running 30x9.5 BFG All-Terrain tires. What do you think now ? Any difference now ? Thanks

That will not be a good combination. The ring & pinion should by 4.37 (or higher). With the 3.88, your RPM's will be too low. That tranny sounds like an early "freeway flyer". And that is with short 25" tall tires. Tom
