Bigger wheels for my buggy

Post by marxmanx »

I'm trying to put 31x10.50 15 tires on my large pattern 5 lug wheels. I have 2 chevy 5 lug on 5" bolt hole circle, 7" rims I'd like to use, but this is not essential. Any suggestions? I'm trying to go with stock steel rims to keep the price down.

Are you going to drive it on the street, off-road, or both.

Both. My motivation is that I try to drive the beaches on the outer banks of North Carolina, but the sand is soft near the dune line and very rutted from 4 wheel drive vehicles. I drag bottom and lose traction with my curent 235/75 15's so I thought a larger tire was in order.

I use a 31x10.50x15 Remington Wide Brute on a 6.5in rim. Did have to switch to short torsion bars to clear tire. Off road race cars use 31,33, and 35in BFG Baja TAs on 7in wide wheels. Pulls sidewalls in so less chance of rock bending wheel. BFG Baja TAs have DOT rating.

These are copies of the old Gates Sand Blasters. They're marked not for highway use but...Image Baja Pro NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE! Image http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/off-road.php?item=BajaPro

Has anyone tried the Baja Pro tyres on the road? I have been thinking of getting some for my buggy as my front tyres. They make a 30/7/15 which would be perfect as a front tyre. My buggy sees about 80% off road use. I am currently running 31/10.5/15 rear tyres and would like a front tyre that has a similar diameter to my rear tyres.

i don't know if you're going to get enough flex with the 31 tire. i had big problems in obx the first day i tried it too. but you've seen the pics. after i lowered the pressure low enough i was driving circles around anything on the beach. and yeah, its real loose and real deep stuff. i had to go down to 4-5 lbs. my firehawk INDYs,which were recommended for this, worked great. my tires are 275/60s, maybe you need a bit wider?
