Taking a walk on the quieter side

As much as I love the sound of a big motor, my ear drums couldn't take it any more
So today was the day to change over
Heck, I can even a converstion now while driving

Changing from the staight quietflow muffler

to the larger offset flow

It all fit in so nice and easy

Gene,
I know exactly what you mean.
I'm ready to put aluminum push-rods in my buggy.
It made the Baja much quieter.

I will be doing something like this over the winter. I have the EMPI Baja style exhaust, and the muffer that came with it has some cracks forming at the tab that connects it to the flange for support. I'm thinking of going with an even quieter muffler. Any suggestions?

I have not had good luck with EMPI exhaust systems.  I would buy Tri-Mil or Bugpack.

From my experience EMPI is an acronym for Every Motor Part is Inferior

I must say that I agree with you guys as far as most of the EMPI stuff goes. The muffler is the only part that's giving me trouble, and I kind of want to keep the rest of the system the same because I already welded a fitting on the pipe that the muffler attaches to for the intake manifold heat riser. If I end up switching to dual carbs, I will likely go with the Tri Mill, which has that pipe going in the opposite direction, but I won't care because there won't be a need for intake manifold heat anymore.

ImageImageI am running Suzuki Hayabusa mufflers on the tow'd. Super quite and they bolt to a standard 3 bolt flange.  Here's another pic for you

Doran,

The Hayabusa muffler might fit well with my application. Thanks for the tip!

Hey Doran, Those Hayabusa's look great!  In my efforts to be just like you, I bought a used pair on ebay for my Tow'd.

Did you weld  flanges onto your existing dual headers?  Or, is there someone out there that makes them with the three-bolt flange?  I just have to figure out how to mount these things now:-)  And, Hey!  What size are your rear tires?

Scott,

I ended up making my own flanges and welding then to the header I already had. The standard three bolt flange, on this header, put the mufflers just to close to the heads for me. I ended up making a set that was off center and it gave me the clearance I was looking for. The best thing to do is cut off the glass pack "muffler" and start test fitting. Oh Make sure you have your bumper mounted during test fitting, don't ask how I know. Also getting them level to an unlevel Tow'd takes some time, but its worth it. They are so nice and quiet. I have also found my father a set.

I am out of town this next week but I'll get some pics of the flanges for you when I get back.

The rear tires are 235/75r15 on 6 inch rims.

Thanks Doran, I'll mess around with it when the mufflers hit my house.  Ha!  I did see you're bumper mount behind the muffler, but I wasn't going to say anything.  I really don't know how you'd avoid obstructing it, though, unless you get some really low headers that block your valve covers.  The rear tires look like the perfect size.  Your Tow'd really looks good . . .Thanks for the help!
