The short story is I need to replace the 6volt starter with a 12volt starter. The engine is installed. How do I remove the 6volt bushing without removing the engine?

You can use a 12V automatic starter, they do not use a bushing, Autozone sells them.

Jimbo is right, buy a VW autostick starter and leave the old bushing in.

Will the autostick starter work with the 200mm flywheel??? I replaced the 180mm flywheel when I changed out the clutch.

Thanks, I will look at the autostick starter this weekend. Something else has me puzzeled. My buggy has a 12v battery. How can that work with a 6volt starter. Is there anything else I should be looking at. I also have an alternator w/regulator.

Your'e good to go, as a lot of people used 6V starters, but they can burn out if cranked too long. I.E. throwing 12V into a 6V motor.

My buggy had a 6 volt starter in for 20 years with a 12 volt battery. I did change over to the 12 volt when I changed the flywheel and clutch with a new bushing to fit the 12 Volt. Also had to clearance the bell housing because on the 6 volt bell the bigger 12 volt flywheel did not fit.

Easy solution.....buy one of these 12V starters that is self supporting and has a 6V gear on it. No need to grind or clearance. Just did this and it solves any starting issues you might have.

In the last 6 months or so, I've bought about 6 of the "auto-stick" starters at O'Reilly's for friends & each time they were $39.99 plus $10.00 core!!! That's a great deal... hope you got a deal too!!!
