Steering Column Assembly

Post by principiab »

Does anyone out there have a diagram of the steering column assembly for a 1967 beetle?  We've taken ours apart due to body off restoration and can't figure out how to put it back together and what new parts we might need.  Have found nothing helpful on the internet.

Thanks!

A 1967 steering column is a simple design with just a outer tube the steering shaft on the inside. On the top there is a bearing that sets in the end of the tube that the shaft rides in. On the outside of top of the tube the turn signal switch sits and is held on with a screw that that you tighten in place.

As for what holds the cloumn in place in your buggy every buggy seems to use different way.

On the bottom of the steering column tube from the factory there is a male slip on connector for the stock horn wiring setup.

Now if you have a 1968 and later steering column with a key switch with the turn switch at the top it is mostly the same except where the bearing is located.

I sure there is someone who know where to find pictures of what you are looking for will post something. I use the Bentley Factory manuals for references.

Is there any close to you that may be able to come over and help you?

I know it is to late now but, I do recomend when taking something apart in the future for the first time an unsure how it goes back together to take pictures. I do it myself. Digital cameras have made it alot easier now days.

Thank you so much for the info! I thought to take pictures AFTER we tore it down! It's been a year so the memory has faded, too, which makes it all the harder!

Appreciate your help -

If you haven't yet picked up the Haynes Manual for VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia 1954 to 1979, it is a great resource with lots of pictures that will help you every step of the way. You can still pick it up at most auto parts stores.
