Buggy Bums Campout - June 15-17 NJ pine barrens

Post by 90volts »

Who: anyone interested in a little offroad fun ? buggy, baja, jeep, whatever When: June 15-17 , fri-sun , father's day weekend where: Lebanon state forest (Brendan T. Byrne state forest) Pine Barrens, NJ http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandfore ... byrne.html We are organizing a Buggy Campout the weekend of June 15th to the 17th in the New Jersey pine barrens. This is for anyone interested in doing a little offroad exploration. Soft sand, tight trails, small hill climbs, mud possible. You may get your ride dirty! Image You may get some "pine barrens pinstriping" in the paint. Image We're looking at private campgrounds in the area where route 72 and route 70 intersect. So that is TBA right now. We are looking at tent sites with trailer accessibility and hookups. There is gas and a wawa right at the intersection of 70/72 so it's not like we'll be in the middle of nowhere! There is some civilization around in case anyone needs any of the comforts of home. Map The pine barrens are an outdoor paradise. From pristine lakes and ponds to hidden ruins and cemeteries there is a whole other world to discover right here in our backyard. Image We will be able to ride through Lebanon state forest and Wharton state forest. Trails wind everywhere through the forest. Be sure to bring a GPS or topo map if you have one to plot locations of interest for future rides. In the Wharton state forest the historic village of Batsto has been recreated as it appeared in the late 1700s during which it was a bog mining and glass making town. They have guided tours of the town . http://www.batstovillage.org/ The area became home to the cranberry industry in the early 1900s after the forest reclaimed most of the civilization of the previous iron industry. Cranberry bogs can be seen in many places in the barrens as well as the ruins of some of the equipment used for harvesting and workers communities of the time. In fact New Jersey is the number three producer of cranberries in the U.S today. And if the daytime trailriding isn?t enough for thrillseekers we are planning on a jersey devil night hunt! A trailride through the barrens in the dark. Not really in search of the devil, we don?t really want to find him. And we are hoping he doesn?t find us either! http://theshadowlands.net/jd.htm Image Come out for a leisurely weekend with the family in the pine barrens. Despite being just an hour away from Philadelphia, the pine barrens remains largely rural and undeveloped. In fact, the area has the unique distinction of being the largest piece of open space between Boston and Richmond, Virginia. We are by no means "experts" on the pine barrens. If you know of locations nearby let's see them! Come out , spend time, follow the group for the day or make your own trail and tell everyone about it when we meet up back at camp that night. This is just about getting some like minded people together to enjoy our buggys and the great outdoors. For more info you can contact me at snackeral@comcast.net

That sounds like a great weekend to me. Me and the family will be there with the dune buggy. Got to go out and find that jersey devil.

a small update for anyone looking. the vehicle you plan on using must be registered, inspected and insured for street use. make sure you have a copy of your registration and insurance coverage with you! atvs, dirt bikes , etc are not legal to ride on state owned land in new jersey.

we checked out the state park for camping info. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandfore ... byrne.html got site numbers in a nice section away from traffic located next to a playground for the kids. trailers or tent camping is permitted. water, showers and rest rooms are close by. 2 vehicles per site. ( any others may be parked in the parking lot in front of the ranger station). 6 people per site. the ranger says that fathers' day weekend is not a historically busy weekend for them but reservations are recommended. if you would like a reservation form I can pick them up at the office and mail them out to you. the cost is $20 per night. location is less than 1 hour from the walt whitman bridge in philly. any other info you may need you can email me. mike
