iPad Bad Elf Desert Mapping

Post by Old-Towd »

Last year at Death Valley, Top Line Jon was using an iPad linked to satellite for our route checking.  Without cellular hook up he needed a device called Bad Elf  (  http://bad-elf.com/2013/01/03/updates-on-lightning-based-ios-device-compatability/ ) which acts like a GPS chip and he needed preloaded maps of the area.  I was really impressed with it.  So, Christy got an  iPad 4, 64 GB, WiFi no cellular model for Christmas ( how cool now I can use it ).  Problem #1 with the new iPad 4 is a new cord connection, but Bad Elf came out with at Bluetooth model which fixed the problem of being able to run off a 12V and run the Bad Elf ( only one hook up connection on iPad ).  I downloaded an app MotionX GPS HD ( note: not MotionX GPS DRIVE HD ).  MotionX is highly praised and so far I'm impressed with the ease of it, even Jon's 1st impression was good.   Bad Elf will connect 5 devices via Bluetooth up to 30 ft. and  MotionX will allow you to automatically e-mail 5 friends every time you hit a waypoint.  You can make your own waypoints at anytime on the trip.  Also, take a photo of that waypoint with the iPad.  It's a really cool program  (  http://gps.motionx.com/ipad/overview/ ). I've ordered Bad Elf from Amazon and will keep you updated.  I'm not an expert so if anyone finds any errors on my testimony feel free to comment.
