when buying buggy or any aircooled vw, be wary of the high idle. any poor condition vw motor will run seemingly well at a high idle. the idle should be between 800 - 1000 rpm. if it doesn't have a tachometer; learn the sound a high reving motor makes, compared to a correct idle. people set the idle high to keep motor from stalling. if it wont run smooth at 800-100 rpm there is a problem. it could be as simple as a tune up, adjusting valves. or could be something more. if seller says it just had tune up and has set idle high its a tip off, somethings not right. this is a trick I have seen and is used to hide a bad carb. I was reminded of this trick today as a vw I hadn't used for 8 weeks wouldn't idle correctly so I turned up idle. I then decided to find and fix problem correctly. it only needed a good cleaning with can of carb cleaner and retune of carb.
