Post by Gene-C »

What is the diameter of the bolts that hold the fromt beam on to the head? I want to thru bolt with lock nuts on the other side and need to know diameter to buy them tomorow!

Did you have to drill the threads out in the head to thru bolt with the 1/2 inch bolt? The original bolts are metric and a 1/2 inch stantard wont thread...

If you have a hardware store near by, take one of the original bolts with you, find a metric nut that fits it.

I think its a 12mm x 1.5 thread bolt. Not too sure. Its been awhile since I tapped out the head.

Ok I want to replace them with stardard thread/diameter stainless steel bolts. What would be the equivalent to 12mm in inches? That way I can buy a drill bit to knock out the threads in the head and thru bolt with the S/S bolts and lock nuts.

So then a 1/2 inch drill bit will actualy make the hole a tiny bit larger (.5mm) and knock off the threads as well? Then Ill just use a 1/2 bolt right?

OK ... I was a little off. The 1/2" is actually 12.7mm ... hey it was over 20 years ago. If you're going to use a 1/2" bolt then you will need to drill it over size. You need to use at least a 9/16" drill. The site I just checked said 15%-20% larger hole than the bolt size. Wild Mike

Why would I want a larger hole than the bolt itself? Any particular reason? I have drilled 1/2 inch holes before and used a 1/2 bolt with no prob...then why?

Alex DON'T use stainless. Most stainless is very brittle and only rated to grade 3. MURZ
