Re: Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

Well, a recent snow storm, and then ice storm took away my will to live. Need some warm weather to revive me. Winter sucks!!! I did however get some other items checked off the list. Since body work will start soon, I have done some paint stripping. 80 grit paper and a DA. 6 layers of paint later, t...

Re: Bud's Manx Restoration

Tank is completely finished and ready to go in the buggy. The inside was cleaned again with a industrial solvent and hot water. Tumbled with a hand full of 3/4 inch nuts inside the tank. Triple rinsed with hot water, (all nuts retrieved). Washed with about 1 quart of Acetone to absorb any remaining ...

Re: Bud's Manx Restoration

The absolute best way to vent a tank is with a vented fuel cap. it will always be the highest point in the tank, no extra vent needed, and it is outside of the buggy "compartment".

Re: Bud's Manx Restoration

There are several ways to route a vent on a fuel tank. No one way is the best. Bud's idea of some tubing that can be bent into a coil, then routed down is a good. Most important is the placement of the vent. Never from the tank itself. If fuel get above the vent level, as the fuel expands, it pushes...

Re: Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

What radiator are you planning on using and where are you planning on mounting it?
Hold onto your hat Ben, that is coming up this weekend.

Re: New Towd project

Good project. You are not the only one who buys the cut up buggy's. It is fun though bringing them back from the dumpster to driver status.

Looking forward to watching your build.

Re: Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

Thanks Ben! Because almost anything you do to a buggy is not wrong, they are super fun car to work on and modify. I try to describe my builds in simple detail to maybe encourage others to work on theirs. So, since at the time of the Chassis work was being done, Roy had not completely decided on how ...

Re: Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

Since seat location is very important for other fabrication aspects, they need to be mounted early on so as to be sure where the rest of the items end up. The seats being used are 911 Porsche. Very nice, but a touch too wide to sit down into the floor area. But since the body has a 3 inch left, this...

Re: Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

The next step is to get the body mounted to the chassis so that other things can be fabricated and locations established. I made two threshold plates to sandwich the body between. This gives a good flex free foundation. The steel is 1 1/2 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. I slot cut the curve area, be...

Re: Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

I am enjoying it so far. A lot of new-to-me things I get to be exposed to and figure out for Roy. First up was to make the Aluminum fuel tank fit. This is one of the first few TKM made about 3 years ago, and then stopped. I cannot remember the capacity, but it fills the void under the hood and exten...

Roy's Ecotec Manx I build completion

Roy had spoken to me at the Manx Club's 2014 Big Bear event about completing his Ecotec Manx. Well, his position in line has come, and the work is progressing nicely. This is not a basic build, but a highly modified and tricked out build and I am proud to be a part of it. Roy has already had a signi...

Re: Bud's Manx Restoration

Great Brian, I'm glad you like it!

My next one will be on my Tow'd. Going to shoot for 15 gallon +.

(But I don't know anyone who would want to ride in a Tow'd for 300+ miles without stopping.)

Re: Bud's Manx Restoration

Since the top was modified to get the last drop out of it, it was time to modify the bottom to increase it's capacity. First I made a crude cardboard template of clearances needed. Tie rods have to move up and down as the suspension travels, pitman arm, stabilizer shock, steering column, tunnel and ...

Re: Bud's Manx Restoration

I think some one got bitten by the Long Haul League, the Iron Buggy Award and all the recent cross country traveling. Bud sent me his fuel tank and a pile of photos, and I agreed to modify his fuel tank for a larger volume and to get almost 100% usage of the capacity out of it. 3581 3582 Since it is...
